One of the saddest books I have ever read! I enjoyed the cultural depth to the book. In fact, I feel that it could have used more Japanese immersion. The novel, however, did expose the audience to some Japanese words and a handful of cultural references. The relationship between the siblings is very dynamic, and I believe that any child can relate to the children, no matter where their land in the family ranking.Katie was a great break way from the stereotypical Asian American. Her inner battle with her grades and her feelings added a wonderful layer and allowed the audience to see the work that is dedicated to family and goals. The downside to the novel were the use of some strong curse words and some uncomfortable subjects.Wonderful book - loved it!
